While everyone loves a traditional strand of white or black pearls, colorful pearl jewelry is set to be very big in 2010. From freshwater to South Sea or Tahitian pearls, there are colorful pearls for every style and price point.

Freshwater pearls are the lowest price point of the many different types of pearls. While they can be produced in every shape imaginable and treated to represent a rainbow of colors, the round ones that develop their color naturally are the most popular. Tahitian pearl jewelry is commonly thought of as just being black or grey, but it also can be found in shades of warm cream, vibrant silver, green, bright peacock and charcoal. These pearls are often accentuated with dazzling undertones of many other colors. Along with the beautiful baroque, round, drop and oval shapes they come in, it is the brilliant colors and undertones of Tahitian pearls that make them so unique.

“While round colorful Tahitian pearl pieces are coveted by many, the artistic nature of the baroque Tahitian pearl can also be a major draw for pearl lovers,” Smith said.

Golden South Sea pearls are often paired with yellow gold and exhibit a satiny luster that is a result of the tepid waters in which they grow. The larger sizes of South Sea pearls often times puts them into the category of ‘power pearl jewelry,’ which are elegant, statement pieces worn by influential women. The warm glow to the golden South Sea pearl looks beautiful on many different skin tones, making it a very popular pearl right now with politicians and celebrities.

In the case of the round freshwater pearls, colorful pearl jewelry can traditional and understated or it can be a bit bolder and luxurious as seen with the Tahitian and South Sea pearls. No matter what your preference or price point, colorful pearls are forecast to be the next significant look in jewelry.
